“What are we doing?” Amyas murmured sometime later.

Mordred was on his back, with Amyas pressed against his side. He’d wrapped an arm around Amyas’s shoulders to hold him close. Amyas wasn’t going anywhere, but the thought of losing him was terrifying anyway.

“What do you mean?” Mordred asked as he stroked his fingertips up and down Amyas’s naked back.

“Us. I’ve been staying in your bedroom almost since I arrived, and you just offered for me to move in completely. What does that mean?” Amyas paused and propped himself up on his elbow. He looked down at Mordred, and Mordred looked up at him. “You know I don’t have any kind of experience with this. I’ve never had a relationship.”

Mordred also knew why, but he still found it hard to believe. Amyas was young, even as an immortal being, but not that young. “Is that what you want? For us to be in a relationship?”

Amyas glared. “Isn’t that what we already have? Or is it only sex?”

There was no way for Mordred to misread his own feelings, and they had nothing to do with only sex. “It’s much more than that for me,” he whispered.

Amyas watched him for a moment, then slowly nodded. “The same goes for me. This isn’t only sex. When I asked you to take me along when you left the lake, I never thought something like this would happen.”

“Is it a problem?” Amyas didn’t look unhappy, but Mordred would do everything he could to change that if he was.

“How can you say that?” Amyas asked with a scowl. “Why would it be a problem? I’m just surprised. I didn’t think it would happen, but it doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.”

“Even though you didn’t want a relationship?” Mordred brushed strands of blond hair away from Amyas’s face. He wanted to look at him while they had this conversation.

Amyas sighed. “I don’t think I’ve ever not wanted a relationship. What I didn’t want was to have one with someone I didn’t know for the sake of getting a soul. What’s between us is different.”

“It is,” Mordred agreed. He hesitated. He wasn’t usually one to expose his feelings and talk about them, but this felt like the perfect time to do that. Amyas deserved to know what was going on, especially considering the life Mordred lived.

It was hard to kill a hero, but not impossible, and the conclave knew exactly how to do it. They wouldn’t hesitate, either, if they got their hands on Mordred. Mordred didn’t want to die without Amyas knowing how much he meant to him. He hoped that the way he behaved had already told him, but with Amyas, he couldn’t know. Amyas was so used to being rejected and talked down to that he might not realize.

Mordred sucked in a breath. “I love you,” he confessed.

Amyas didn’t even look surprised, which made Mordred feel like a fool. Still, he smiled, and it helped.

“I love you, too,” Amyas said as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
